Effective July 1, 2020 – California Department of Public Health has implemented a mandatory $36 processing fee per student for lead courses in California. This is included in course fee.
This course provides information for those individuals who wish to perform lead-based paint inspections, risk assessments, and/or post-abatement clearance services. This class will prepare students to perform on-site inspection, take samples, determine the severity of lead hazards, and develop options for eliminating those hazards.
The inspector/assessor course prepares you to apply your knowledge to the field, with extensive hands-on training and real-world examples from experienced instructors.
This course is the first step in getting certified through California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Upon completion of the training, you will need to apply to CDPH for certification.
Steps in becoming certified through California’s Department of Public Health (CDPH).
Step 1. Determine if you meet CDPH’s eligibility requirements
Required Education and Experience: A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a biological, chemical, physical science or related field; and
1 year of experience in lead-related construction or a related field (such as asbestos or environmental remediation); a) conducting environmental inspections and assessing environmental health, occupational safety or environmental hazards; or b) designing projects in environmental health, occupational safety or environmental hazard reduction; or
An Associate’s Degree or higher (or 20 semester / 30 quarter college units) in a biological, chemical, physical science or related field; and
2 years of experience in lead-related construction or a related field (such as asbestos or environmental remediation); a) conducting environmental inspections and assessing environmental health, occupational safety or environmental hazards; or b) designing projects in environmental health, occupational safety or environmental hazard reduction; or
A High School Diploma or its equivalent and
3 years of experience in lead-related construction or a related field (such as asbestos or environmental remediation); a) conducting environmental inspections and assessing environmental health, occupational safety or environmental hazards; or b) designing projects in environmental health, occupational safety or environmental hazard reduction.
Required training: Inspector/assessor course (40 hours)
Step 2. Take required training course(s) based on your desired certification.
· Inspection / Assessment course (40 hours) – This class meets this requirement.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT OLD TRAINING If it has been more than 1 year since you completed your CDPH-approved training, you must take 7 hours of CDPH-approved Continuing Education before applying for certification. If it has been more than 3 years since you completed your CDPH-approved training, you must take the full course over again before applying for certification.
Step 3. Take state exam
Each accredited lead-related construction course includes an end-of-course exam. In addition to that exam, there is also a separate state qualifying exam for the following specialties:
- Supervisor (given in English or Spanish)
- Inspector/Assessor
- Project Monitor
Applicants for Worker or Sampling Technician certification do not need to take the exam.

Step 4. Apply for certification
This is the final step in the certification process. For new certifications, you should complete an online application:

NOTES:
Your certification must be renewed annually.
Every other year you are required to attend a 7-hour continuing education (refresher) class before you can renew your certification. The General Continuing Education course is for all disciples EXCEPT for workers.
